What is Distracting You?

Luke 10:40-42(NIV) Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made….”Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed…”

If these were preparations that “had to be made”, how was she to get in on the one needed thing? How was she to avoid being ‘distracted’ by necessary things? And if this was a false dichotomy, how was she to see a third option?

Without any chapter breaks, the narrative continues, “One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of the disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray,…’” and then proceeds with instruction on prayer for various and all challenges we deal with in life.

I think Jesus is modeling how to avoid being distracted while doing necessary things. Getting time with Jesus consistently and ahead of ‘necessary things’ and then consciously abiding in Him will keep us from being distracted and even reveal to us third options. The question is always, “Where is my focus and what/Whom am I trusting?”

And have you noticed, prayer is a ‘time-saver’.
